  1. Seaport of Schleswig-Holstein, West Germany,
  2. on the Baltic Sea, 60 km/37 mi NE of Hamburg;
  3. population (1988) 209,000. Founded 1143, it
  4. has five Gothic churches and a cathedral from
  5. 1173. Once head of the powerful Hanseatic
  6. League, it later lost much of its trade to
  7. Hamburg and Bremen, but improved canal and
  8. port facilities helped it to retain its
  9. position as a centre of Baltic trade. Lubeck
  10. was a free state of both the empire and the
  11. Weimar Republic. The name Lubeck is of
  12. Wendish origin and means `lovely one'.
